The Granny Smith Apple
The Granny Smith Apple
Bright. Crisp. Full of Character.
The Granny Smith apple is famous for its refreshing tartness, firm bite and vibrant green colour. It’s as versatile as it is delicious — perfect for baking, pies, salads or simply as a healthy snack on the go.
Did You Know Granny Smith Was a Real Person?
Maria Ann “Granny” Smith emigrated to Australia from East Sussex, England, in 1839. In 1868, on her property at Eastwood, NSW, she tossed out the remains of some Tasmanian-grown crab apples. When she returned to the spot, she found a brand-new, bright-green apple variety sprouting.
That accidental seedling became the Granny Smith apple we know today. After Maria’s passing in 1870, the apple’s fame spread worldwide. Every Granny Smith tree and apple can be traced back to cuttings from Maria’s original discovery.
An Apple Unlike Any Other
Believed to be a natural hybrid of the European wild apple and the domestic apple, Granny Smiths keep their distinctive green colour even when ripe. Their firm flesh means they hold their shape beautifully in cooking — from tarts to chutneys.
